Exodus 1:1-10 (NASB)

야곱과 함께 각각 자기 가족을 데리고 이집트로 내려간 이스라엘의 아들들의 이름은, 르우벤과 시므온과 레위와 유다와 잇사갈과 스불론과 베냐민과 단과 납달리와 갓과 아셀이다. 이미 이집트에 내려가 있는 요셉까지 합하여, 야곱의 혈통에서 태어난 사람은 모두 일흔 명이다. 세월이 지나서, 요셉과 그의 모든 형제와 그 시대 사람들은 다 죽었다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 자녀를 많이 낳고 번성하여, 그 수가 불어나고 세력도 커졌으며, 마침내 그 땅에 가득 퍼졌다. 요셉을 알지 못하는 새 왕이 일어나서 이집트를 다스리게 되었다. 그 왕이 자기 백성에게 말하였다. "이 백성, 곧 이스라엘 자손이 우리보다 수도 많고, 힘도 강하다. 그러니 이제, 우리는 그들에게 신중히 대처하여야 한다. 그렇게 하지 않으면 그들의 수가 더욱 불어날 것이고, 또 전쟁이라도 일어나는 날에는, 그들이 우리의 원수들과 합세하여 우리를 치고, 이 땅에서 떠나갈 것이다." Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt. Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them. Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. He said to his people, "Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we. "Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land."
