바다에 파도가 점점 더 거세게 일어나니, 사람들이 또 그에게 물었다. "우리가 당신을 어떻게 해야, 우리 앞의 저 바다가 잔잔해지겠소?" 그가 그들에게 대답하였다. "나를 들어서 바다에 던지시오. 그러면 당신들 앞의 저 바다가 잔잔해질 것이오. 바로 나 때문에 이 태풍이 당신들에게 닥쳤다는 것을, 나도 알고 있소."
뱃사람들은 육지로 되돌아가려고 노를 저었지만, 바다에 파도가 점점 더 거세게 일어났으므로 헛일이었다.
그들은 주님을 부르며 아뢰었다. "주님, 빕니다. 우리가 이 사람을 죽인다고 해서 우리를 죽이지 말아 주십시오. 주님께서는 뜻하시는 대로 하시는 분이시니, 우리에게 살인죄를 지우지 말아 주십시오."
그들은 요나를 들어서 바다에 던졌다. 폭풍이 일던 바다가 잔잔해졌다.사람들은 주님을 매우 두려워하게 되었으며, 주님께 희생제물을 바치고서, 주님을 섬기기로 약속하였다. 주님께서는 큰 물고기 한 마리를 마련하여 두셨다가, 요나를 삼키게 하셨다. 요나는 사흘 밤낮을 그 물고기 뱃속에서 지냈다; The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?" "Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."
Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. Then they cried to the LORD, "O LORD, please do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O LORD, have done as you pleased." Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him. But the LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

- How did Jonah know the heart and thoughts of the Lord? What if God wanted a different kind of submission from Jonah instead of throwing himself into the raging ocean?
- What's the point of this passage? To use Jonah as a tool of instrument to bring glory to God by leading unbelieving seamen to Him?
- Why did God let a great fish swallow Jonah and why did He let him stay inside the fish for three days and nights?
