Genesis 43:1-17

그 땅에 기근이 더욱 심해 갔다. 그들이 이집트에서 가지고 온 곡식이 다 떨어졌을 때에, 아버지가 아들들에게 말하였다. "다시 가서, 먹거리를 조금 더 사오너라." 유다가 아버지에게 말하였다. "그 사람이 우리에게 엄하게 경고하면서 '너희가 막내 아우를 데리고 오지 않으면, 다시는 나의 얼굴을 못 볼 것이다' 하고 말하였습니다. 우리가 막내를 데리고 함께 가게 아버지께서 허락하여 주시면, 다시 가서 아버지께서 잡수실 것을 사오겠습니다. 그러나 아버지께서 막내를 보낼 수 없다고 하시면, 우리는 갈 수 없습니다. 그분이 우리에게 말하기를 '너희가 막내 아우를 데리고 오지 않으면, 다시는 나의 얼굴을 못 볼 것이다' 하였기 때문입니다."이스라엘이 자식들을 탓하였다. "어찌하려고 너희는, 아우가 있다는 말을 그 사람에게 해서, 나를 이렇게도 괴롭히느냐?" 그들이 대답하였다. "그 사람은 우리와 우리 가족에 관하여서 낱낱이 캐물었습니다. '너희 아버지가 살아 계시냐?' 하고 묻기도 하고, 또 '다른 형제가 더 있느냐?' 하고 묻기도 하였습니다. 우리는 그저, 그가 묻는 대로 대답하였을 뿐입니다. 그가 우리의 아우를 그리로 데리고 오라고 말할 것이라고는 상상도 하지 못하였습니다." 유다가 아버지 이스라엘에게 말하였다. "제가 막내를 데리고 가게 해주십시오. 그러면 우리가 곧 떠나겠습니다. 그렇게 하여야, 우리도, 아버지도, 우리의 어린 것들도, 죽지 않고 살 수 있을 것입니다. 제가 그 아이의 안전을 책임지겠습니다. 아버지께서는, 그 아이에 대해서는, 저에게 책임을 물어 주십시오. 제가 그 아이를 아버지께로 다시 데리고 와서 아버지 앞에 세우지 못한다면, 그 죄를 제가 평생 달게 받겠습니다. 우리가 이렇게 머뭇거리고 있지 않았으면, 벌써 두 번도 더 다녀왔을 것입니다."아버지 이스라엘이 아들들에게 말하였다. "꼭 그렇게 해야만 한다면, 이렇게 하도록 하여라. 이 땅에서 나는 것 가운데 가장 좋은 토산물을 너희 그릇에 담아 가지고 가서, 그 사람에게 선물로 드리도록 하여라. 유향과 꿀을 얼마쯤 담고, 향품과 몰약과 유향나무 열매와 감복숭아를 담아라. 돈도 두 배를 가지고 가거라. 너희 자루 아귀에 담겨 돌아온 돈은 되돌려 주어야 한다. 아마도 그것은 실수였을 것이다. 너희 아우를 데리고, 어서 그 사람에게로 가거라. 너희들이 그 사람 앞에 설 때에, 전능하신 하나님이 그 사람을 감동시키셔서, 너희에게 자비를 베풀게 해주시기를 빌 뿐이다. 그가 거기에 남아 있는 아이와 베냐민도 너희와 함께 돌려 보내 준다면, 더 바랄 것이 없겠다. 자식들을 잃게 되면 잃는 것이지, 난들 어떻게 하겠느냐?" 사람들은 선물을 꾸리고, 돈도 갑절을 지니고, 베냐민을 데리고 급히 이집트로 가서, 요셉 앞에 섰다.요셉은, 베냐민이 그들과 함께 온 것을 보고서, 자기 집 관리인에게 말하였다. "이 사람들을 집으로 데리고 가시오. 짐승을 잡고, 밥상도 준비하시오. 이 사람들은 나와 함께 점심을 먹을 것이오." 요셉이 말한 대로, 관리인이 그 사람들을 요셉의 집으로 안내하였다.Now the famine was still severe in the land. So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, "Go back and buy us a little more food." But Judah said to him, "The man warned us solemnly, 'You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.' If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you. But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, 'You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.' "Israel asked, "Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?" They replied, "The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. 'Is your father still living?' he asked us. 'Do you have another brother?' We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, 'Bring your brother down here'?" Then Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die. I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice."Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift--a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. Take your brother also and go back to the man at once. And may God Almighty grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved." So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph.When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare dinner; they are to eat with me at noon." The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph's house.
