1 Samuel 8 (성경통독): it’s true that Israel wanted a king because Samuel’s sons - Joel and Abijah (were assigned duty in Beersheba) didn’t take after Samuel; rather, they were out for what they could get for themselves, taking bribes, corrupting justice.... But more importantly, they have rejected God as their King. From the day He brought them out of Egypt until this very day they’ve been behaving like this, leaving God for other gods. Nevertheless, God is understanding and allows Samuel to go ahead Go and do what they’re asking. However, despite God’s warning through Samuel about true meaning of having a king (e.g. warn them of what they’re in for. Tell them the way kings operate, just what they’re likely to get from a king), the people wouldn’t listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We will have a king to rule us! Consequently, Samuel took in what they said and rehearsed it with God. God told Samuel, “Do what they say. Make them a king.” How heartbreaking this must be for God when people don’t really understand His genuine and loving will and plan for them!
