Genesis 29:15-30

라반이 그에게 말하였다. "네가 나의 조카이긴 하다만, 나의 일을 거저 할 수는 없지 않느냐? 너에게 어떻게 보수를 주면 좋을지, 너의 말을 좀 들어 보자. 라반에게는 두 딸이 있었다. 맏딸의 이름은 레아이고, 둘째 딸의 이름은 라헬이다. 레아는 눈매가 부드럽고, 라헬은 몸매가 아름답고 용모도 예뻤다. 야곱은 라헬을 더 사랑하였다. 그래서 그는 "제가 칠 년 동안 외삼촌 일을 해 드릴 터이니, 그 때에 가서, 외삼촌의 작은 딸 라헬과 결혼하게 해주십시오" 하고 말하였다. 그러자 라반이 말하였다. "그 아이를 다른 사람과 짝지어 주는 것보다, 너에게 짝지어 주는 것이 더 낫겠다. 그러면 여기서 나와 함께 살자." 야곱은 라헬을 아내로 맞으려고 칠 년 동안이나 일을 하였지만, 라헬을 사랑하기 때문에, 칠 년이라는 세월을 마치 며칠같이 느꼈다.칠 년이 지난 뒤에, 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. "약속한 기한이 다 되었습니다. 이제 장가를 들게 해주십시오. 라헬과 결혼하겠습니다." 라반이 그 고장 사람들을 다 청해 놓고, 잔치를 베풀었다. 밤이 되었을 때에, 라반은 큰 딸 레아를 데려다가 신방으로 들여보냈는데, 야곱은 그것도 모르고, 레아와 동침하였다. 라반은 여종 실바를 자기 딸 레아에게 몸종으로 주었다. 아침이 되어서 야곱이 눈을 떠 보니, 레아가 아닌가! 야곱이 라반에게 말하였다. "외삼촌께서 저에게 이러실 수가 있습니까? 제가 그 동안 라헬에게 장가를 들려고 외삼촌 일을 해 드린 것이 아닙니까? 외삼촌께서 왜 저를 속이셨습니까?"라반이 대답하였다. "큰 딸을 두고서 작은 딸부터 시집보내는 것은, 이 고장의 법이 아닐세. 그러니 이레 동안 초례 기간을 채우게. 그런 다음에 작은 아이도 자네에게 주겠네. 그 대신에 자네는 또 칠 년 동안 내가 맡기는 일을 해야 하네." 야곱은 그렇게 하였다. 그가 레아와 이레 동안 지내고 나니, 라반은 자기 딸 라헬을 그에게 아내로 주었다. 라반은 여종 빌하를 자기 딸 라헬에게 몸종으로 주었다. 야곱이 라헬과 동침하였다. 야곱은 레아보다, 라헬을 더 사랑하였다. 그는 또다시 칠 년 동안 라반의 일을 하였다.Laban said to him, "Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be."Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel was lovely in form, and beautiful. Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, "I'll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel." Laban said, "It's better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me." So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to lie with her." So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast. But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and gave her to Jacob, and Jacob lay with her. And Laban gave his servant girl Zilpah to his daughter as her maidservant. When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn't I? Why have you deceived me?"Laban replied, "It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one. Finish this daughter's bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work." And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. Laban gave his servant girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant. Jacob lay with Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.
