Revelation 17:1-8

대접 일곱 개를 가진 그 일곱 천사 가운데 하나가 와서, 나에게 "이리로 오너라. 큰 바다 물 위에 앉은 큰 창녀가 받을 심판을 보여 주겠다. 세상의 왕들이 그 여자와 더불어 음행을 하였고, 땅에 사는 사람들이 그 여자의 음행의 포도주에 취하였다" 하고 말하였습니다. 그리고 그 천사는 성령으로 나를 휩싸서, 빈 들로 데리고 갔습니다. 나는 한 여자가 빨간 짐승을 타고 앉아 있는 것을 보았는데, 그 짐승은 하나님을 모독하는 이름들로 가득하였고, 머리 일곱과 뿔 열 개가 달려 있었습니다. 이 여자는 자주색과 빨간색 옷을 입고 금과 보석과 진주로 꾸미고, 손에는 금잔을 들고 있었는데, 그 속에는 가증한 것들과 자기 음행의 더러운 것들이 가득하였습니다. 그리고 이마에는 '땅의 음녀들과 가증한 것들의 어미, 큰 바빌론'이라는 비밀의 이름이 적혀 있었습니다.그리고 나는 그 여자가 성도들의 피와 예수의 증인들의 피에 취하여 있는 것을 보았습니다. 내가 그 여자를 보고 크게 놀라니, 그 때에 천사가 나에게 말하였습니다. "왜 놀라느냐? 나는 이 여자의 비밀과, 이 여자를 태우고 다니는 머리 일곱과 뿔 열이 달린 그 짐승의 비밀을, 너에게 말하여 주겠다. 네가 본 그 짐승은, 전에는 있었지만 지금은 없으며, 장차 아비소스에서 올라와서, 나중에는 멸망하여 버릴 자다. 그리고 땅 위에 사는 사람들 가운데 창세 때로부터 생명책에 이름이 적혀 있지 않은 사람들은, 그 짐승을 보고 놀랄 것이다. 그것은, 그 짐승이 전에는 있었다가, 지금은 없으나, 장차 다시 나타날 것이기 때문이다.One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries." Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. This title was written on her forehead: MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. Then the angel said to me: "Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns. The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come.
