1 John 5: "Whoever believes in the Son of God inwardly confirms God’s testimony." So it's not outward change that matters but our inward change of hearts toward Christ is really what matters.
2 John 1: "whoever stays with the teaching, stays faithful to both the Father and the Son." So it's important that we don't walk out on God and stay with Him. We should do our best to be diligent in living out the Truth, exactly as commanded by the Father. And the most important step to follow would be to love one another. "Love means following his commandments, and his unifying commandment is that we conduct our lives in love."
