Genesis 47:13-31

기근이 더욱 심해지더니, 온 세상에 먹거리가 떨어지고, 이집트 땅과 가나안 땅에서는 이 기근 때문에 사람들이 야위어 갔다. 사람들이 요셉에게 와서, 곡식을 사느라고 돈을 치르니, 이집트 땅과 가나안 땅의 모든 돈이 요셉에게로 몰렸고, 요셉은 그 돈을 바로의 궁으로 가지고 갔다. 이집트 땅과 가나안 땅에서 돈마저 떨어지자, 이집트 사람들이 모두 요셉에게 와서 말하였다. "우리에게 먹거리를 주십시오. 돈이 떨어졌다고 하여, 어른께서 보시는 앞에서 죽을 수야 없지 않습니까?" 요셉이 말하였다. "그러면, 당신들이 기르는 집짐승이라도 가지고 오시오. 돈이 떨어졌다니, 집짐승을 받고서 먹거리를 팔겠소." 그래서 백성들은 자기들이 기르는 집짐승을 요셉에게로 끌고 왔다. 요셉은 그들이 끌고 온 말과 양 떼와 소 떼와 나귀를 받고서 먹거리를 내주었다. 이렇게 하면서 요셉은, 한 해 동안 내내, 집짐승을 다 받고서 먹거리를 내주었다. 그 해가 다 가고, 이듬해가 되자, 백성들이 요셉에게로 와서 말하였다. "돈은 이미 다 떨어지고, 집짐승마저 다 어른의 것이 되었으므로, 이제 어른께 드릴 수 있는 것으로 남은 것이라고는, 우리의 몸뚱아리와 밭뙈기뿐입니다. 어른께 무엇을 더 숨기겠습니까? 어른께서 보시는 앞에서, 우리가 밭과 함께 망할 수야 없지 않습니까? 그러니, 우리의 몸과 우리의 밭을 받고서 먹거리를 파십시오. 우리가 밭까지 바쳐서, 바로의 종이 되겠습니다. 우리에게 씨앗을 주십시오. 그러면, 우리가 죽지 않고 살아날 것이며, 밭도 황폐하게 되지 않을 것입니다." 요셉은 이집트에 있는 밭을 모두 사서, 바로의 것이 되게 하였다. 이집트 사람들은, 기근이 너무 심하므로, 견딜 수 없어서, 하나같이 그들이 가지고 있는 밭을 요셉에게 팔았다. 그래서 그 땅은 바로의 것이 되었다. 요셉은 이집트 이 끝에서 저 끝까지를 여러 성읍으로 나누고, 이집트 전 지역에 사는 백성을 옮겨서 살게 하였다. 그러나 요셉은, 제사장들이 가꾸는 밭은 사들이지 않았다. 제사장들은 바로에게서 정기적으로 녹을 받고 있고, 바로가 그들에게 주는 녹 가운데는 먹거리가 넉넉하였으므로, 그들은 땅을 팔 필요가 없었다. 요셉이 백성에게 말하였다. "이제, 내가 당신들의 몸과 당신들의 밭을 사서, 바로께 바쳤소. 여기에 씨앗이 있소. 당신들은 이것을 밭에 뿌리시오. 곡식을 거둘 때에, 거둔 것에서 오분의 일을 바로께 바치고, 나머지 오분의 사는 당신들이 가지시오. 거기에서 밭에 뿌릴 씨앗을 따로 떼어 놓으면, 그 남는 것이 당신들과 당신들의 집안과 당신들 자식들의 먹거리가 될 것이오." 백성들이 말하였다. "어른께서 우리의 목숨을 건져 주셨습니다. 어른께서 우리를 어여삐 보시면, 우리는 기꺼이 바로의 종이 되겠습니다." 요셉이 이렇게 이집트의 토지법 곧 밭에서 거둔 것의 오분의 일을 바로에게 바치는 법을 만들었으며, 지금까지도 그 법은 유효하다. 다만, 제사장의 땅만은 바로의 것이 되지 않았다. 이스라엘 자손은 이집트의 고센 땅에 자리를 잡았다. 거기에서 그들은 재산을 얻고, 생육하며 번성하였다. 야곱이 이집트 땅에서 열일곱 해를 살았으니, 그의 나이가 백마흔일곱 살이었다. 이스라엘은 죽을 날을 앞두고, 그의 아들 요셉을 불러 놓고 일렀다. "네가 이 아버지에게 효도를 할 생각이 있으면, 너의 손을 나의 다리 사이에 넣고, 네가 인애와 성심으로 나의 뜻을 받들겠다고 나에게 약속하여라. 나를 이집트에 묻지 말아라. 내가 눈을 감고, 조상들에게로 돌아가면, 나를 이집트에서 옮겨서, 조상들께서 누우신 그 곳에 나를 묻어다오." 요셉이 대답하였다. "아버지 말씀대로 하겠습니다." 야곱이 다짐하였다. "그러면 이제 나에게 맹세하여라." 요셉이 아버지에게 맹세하니, 이스라엘이 침상 맡에 엎드려서, 하나님께 경배하였다. There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine. Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh's palace. When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, "Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is used up." "Then bring your livestock," said Joseph. "I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone." So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock. When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, "We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. Why should we perish before your eyes--we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate." So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh's, and Joseph reduced the people to servitude, from one end of Egypt to the other. However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land. Joseph said to the people, "Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children." "You have saved our lives," they said. "May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh." So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt--still in force today--that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh's. Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number. Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven. When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt, but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried." "I will do as you say," he said. "Swear to me," he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.
