Jeremiah 40: As prophesied through Jeremiah, the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor of the land, putting him in charge of the men, women, and children of the poorest of the poor who hadn’t been taken off to exile in Babylon. Their job was to take care of the land rather than continuing their warfare against the Babylonians (Chaldeans).

Jeremiah 41: Murder, betrayal, dishonest gains.... all this still continues. They sought to go to Egypt to get away from the Chaldeans, stopping on the way at Geruth-kimham near Bethlehem. They were afraid of what the Chaldeans might do in retaliation of Ishmael son of Nethaniah’s murder of Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor of the country.

Jeremiah 42: God's message could not be any clearer. God has plainly told the leftovers from Judah, ‘Don’t go to Egypt.’ Nevertheless, if the people still don't obey despite this warning message by God through Jeremiah, then there will be dooming consequences waiting for them.
