Genesis 34:11-23

세겜도 디나의 아버지와 오라버니들에게 간청하였다. "저를 너그러이 보아 주시기 바랍니다. 원하시는 것은 무엇이든지 드리겠습니다. 신부를 데려오는 데 치러야 할 값을 정해 주시고, 제가 가져 와야 할 예물의 값도 정해 주시기 바랍니다. 아무리 많이 요구하셔도, 요구하시는 만큼 제가 치르겠습니다. 다만 제가 바라는 것은, 디나를 저의 아내로 주시기를 바라는 것뿐입니다." 야곱의 아들들은, 세겜이 그들의 누이 디나를 욕보였으므로, 세겜과 그의 아버지 하몰에게 짐짓 속임수를 썼다. 그들은 세겜과 하몰에게 이렇게 말하였다. "우리는 그렇게 할 수 없습니다. 할례를 받지 않은 남자에게 우리의 누이를 줄 수 없습니다. 그렇게 하는 것은 우리에게 부끄러운 일입니다. 조건이 하나 있습니다. 당신들 쪽에서 남자들이 우리처럼 모두 할례를 받겠다고 하면, 그 청혼을 받아들이겠습니다. 그렇게 하면, 우리가 딸들을 당신들에게로 시집도 보내고, 당신네 딸들을 우리가 며느리로 삼으며, 당신들과 함께 여기에서 살고, 더불어 한 겨레가 되겠습니다. 그러나 당신들 쪽에서 할례 받기를 거절하면, 우리는 우리의 누이를 데리고 여기에서 떠나겠습니다." 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜은, 야곱의 아들들이 내놓은 제안을 좋게 여겼다. 그래서 그 젊은이는 시간을 지체하지 않고, 그들이 제안한 것을 실천으로 옮겼다. 그만큼 그는 야곱의 딸을 좋아하였다. 세겜은 자기 아버지의 집안에서 가장 존귀한 인물이었다. 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜이 성문께로 가서, 그들의 성읍 사람들에게 말하였다. "이 사람들이 우리에게 우호적입니다. 그러니 그들이 우리 땅에서 살면서, 우리와 함께 물건을 서로 사고팔게 합시다. 이 땅은 그들을 받아들일 수 있을 만큼 넓습니다. 우리가 그들의 딸들과 결혼할 수 있게 하고, 그들은 우리의 딸들과 결혼할 수 있게 합시다. 그러나 이 사람들이 기꺼이 우리와 한 겨레가 되어서, 우리와 함께 사는 데는, 조건이 하나 있습니다. 그들이 할례를 받는 것처럼, 우리쪽 남자들이 모두 할례를 받아야 한다는 것입니다. 그렇게 하면, 그들의 양 떼와 재산과 집짐승이 모두 우리의 것이 되지 않겠습니까? 다만, 그들이 우리에게 요구하는 것은 그대로 합시다. 우리가 그렇게 할례를 받으면, 그들이 우리와 함께 살 것입니다." Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask. Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife." Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us. We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males. Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you. But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go." Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen. "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours. But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are. Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."
