모세는, 백성이 제멋대로 날뛰는 것을 보았다. 아론이 그들을 제멋대로 날뛰게 하여, 적들의 조롱거리가 되게 한 것이다. 모세는 진 어귀에 서서 "누구든지 주의 편에 설 사람은 나에게로 나아오너라" 하고 외쳤다. 그러자 레위의 자손이 모두 그에게로 모였다. 그가 또 그들에게 말하였다. "이스라엘의 주 하나님이 이르시기를 '너희는 각기 허리에 칼을 차고, 진의 이 문에서 저 문을 오가며, 저마다 자기의 친척과 친구와 이웃을 닥치는 대로 찔러 죽여라' 하신다." 레위 자손이 모세의 말대로 하니, 바로 그 날, 백성 가운데서 어림잡아 삼천 명쯤 죽었다. 모세가 말하였다. "오늘 너희가 저마다 자녀와 형제자매를 희생시켜 너희 자신을 주께 드렸으니, 주께서 너희에게 복을 내리실 것이다."

This is one of the sections from the Old Testament that we have to interpret very carefully. I am very sure that God was not happy to see His dearly loved creations kill each other. Moses was a very hot-blooded person, easy to anger and not being able to control his emotions at times. But at the same time, I understand his reaction. He could not bear the fact that the Israelites had turned away from the Lord so quick and easily. Hence, he tells the people to sacrifice each other in the Lord, saying "You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day." We need to remain in our prayers daily to discern the will and heart of the Lord.
