Genesis 31:31-40

야곱이 라반에게 대답하였다. "장인 어른께서 저의 처들을 강제로 빼앗으실까 보아 두려웠습니다. 그러나 장인 어른 댁 수호신상들을 훔친 사람이 있으면, 그를 죽이셔도 좋습니다. 장인 어른의 물건 가운데서 무엇이든 하나라도 저에게 있는지, 우리의 친족들이 보는 앞에서 찾아보시고, 있거든 가져 가십시오." 야곱은, 라헬이 그 수호신상들을 훔쳤으리라고는, 전혀 생각하지 못하였다. 라반은 먼저 야곱의 장막을 뒤졌다. 다음에는 레아의 장막과 두 여종의 장막까지 뒤졌으나, 아무것도 찾아내지 못하였다. 레아의 장막에서 나온 라반은 라헬의 장막으로 들어갔다. 라헬은 그 수호신상들을 낙타 안장 밑에 감추고서, 그 위에 올라타 앉아 있었다. 라반은 장막 안을 샅샅이 뒤졌으나, 아무것도 찾아내지 못하였다. 라헬이 자기 아버지에게 말하였다. "아버지, 너무 노여워하지 마십시오. 지금 저는 월경중이므로, 내려서 아버지를 맞이할 수 없습니다." 라반은 두루 찾아보았으나, 끝내 그 수호신상들을 찾지 못하였다.야곱은 화를 내며 라반에게 따졌다. 야곱이 라반에게 물었다. "저의 허물이 무엇입니까? 제가 무슨 죄를 지었다고, 불길처럼 달려들어서, 저를 따라오신 것입니까? 장인 어른께서 저의 물건을 다 뒤져 보셨는데, 장인 어른의 물건을 하나라도 찾으셨습니까? 장인 어른의 친족과 저의 친족이 보는 앞에서, 그것을 내놓아 보십시오. 그리고 장인 어른과 저 사이에 누구에게 잘못이 있는지, 이 사람들이 판단할 수 있게 해주십시오. 제가 무려 스무 해를 장인 어른과 함께 지냈습니다. 그 동안 장인 어른의 양 떼와 염소 떼가 한 번도 낙태한 일이 없고, 제가 장인 어른의 가축 떼에서 숫양 한 마리도 잡아다가 먹은 일이 없습니다. 들짐승에게 찢긴 놈은, 제가 장인 어른께 가져가지 않고, 제것으로 그것을 보충하여 드렸습니다. 낮에 도적을 맞든지 밤에 도적을 맞든지 하면, 장인 어른께서는 저더러 그것을 물어내라고 하셨습니다. 낮에는 더위에 시달리고, 밤에는 추위에 떨면서, 눈 붙일 겨를도 없이 지낸 것, 이것이 바로 저의 형편이었습니다.Jacob answered Laban, "I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force. But if you find anyone who has your gods, he shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it." Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods. So Laban went into Jacob's tent and into Leah's tent and into the tent of the two maidservants, but he found nothing. After he came out of Leah's tent, he entered Rachel's tent. Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel's saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing. Rachel said to her father, "Don't be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I'm having my period." So he searched but could not find the household gods.Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. "What is my crime?" he asked Laban. "What sin have I committed that you hunt me down? Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us. "I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night. This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.
