1 Timothy 3:1-7

이 말은 옳습니다. 어떤 사람이 감독의 직분을 맡고 싶어하면, 그는 훌륭한 일을 바란다고 하겠습니다. 그러므로 감독은, 책망할 것이 없으며, 한 아내의 남편이며, 절제하며, 신중하며, 단정하며, 나그네를 대접하며, 가르치기를 잘하며, 술을 즐기지 아니하며, 난폭하지 아니하고 너그러우며, 다투지 아니하며, 돈을 사랑하지 아니하며, 자기 가정을 잘 다스리며, 언제나 위엄을 가지고 자녀들을 순종하게 하는 사람이라야 합니다. （자기 가정을 다스릴 줄 모르는 사람이 어떻게 하나님의 교회를 돌볼 수 있겠습니까?） 또 새로 입교한 사람도 안 됩니다. 그리하면 그가 교만해져서, 마귀가 받을 심판에 떨어질 위험이 있습니다. 감독은 또한, 교회 밖의 사람들에게도 좋은 평판을 받는 사람이라야 합니다. 그래야 그가 비방을 받지 않으며, 악마의 올무에 걸리지 않을 것입니다. Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.
