1 Kings 1: We can see that no matter how hard a person tries to set himself up as the king, The Lord did not allow it to happen. Rather, the hands of the Lord were still on David and gave him the wisdom to elect his successor - King Solomon.

1 Kings 2: David's charge to Solomon was as follows: " observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses." We should keep in mind that David did not ask Solomon to give numerous meaningless animal sacrifices. But it's clear that David asked Solomon to "walk in obedience to the Lord."

1 Kings 3: Solomon received what he really wanted and needed - a wise and discerning heart
and wisdom from God to administer justice. Because Solomon's heart and focus were really longing for this, the Lord was pleased and granted him his wish and also He blessed him with wealth, honor and long life.

1 Kings 4: Indeed Solomon was a wise ruler and authority and he had many officials and governors reporting to him. Nevertheless, it was God who gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Fully acknowledging the Lord in our lives is the first step to surrender to His Lordship.
