2 Samuel 17: Ahithophel, Hushai or Absalom...why were they so desperate to kill David? After all, they all had served and counseled David for long. So we can see how God's plan is at work in this situation. I think God wants David to fully rely on Him during this period of escape and hiding.

2 Samuel 18: Rather than having a sense of relief, David is devastated of Absalom's death. While his watchmen think that they bring good news saying that his troops have vindicated him by delivering him from the hand of all who rose up again him, David is saddened that his son died which is natural. David must have had a sense of regret that it had come too far to be reversed.

2 Samuel 19: As David returns to Jerusalem, a new conflict seems to be on the rise between Israel and Judah. Also, it's interesting to see how David after all these years is still kind and considerate for his followers.

2 Samuel 20: After the conspiracy of Absalom, now Sheba also rebels against David but his raid is stopped a little while after thanks to Joab and his faithfulness to the king. Also, we can see the establishment of a hierarchy (bureacracy) among David's officials.
